HCCI Announces Major New Funding Commitment from the Robert Wood Johnson Foundation

$2 million grant will support HCCI’s ongoing work to study drivers of health care spending

WASHINGTON (December 23, 2019) — The The Health Care Cost Institute (HCCI) today announced a $2 million grant from the Robert Wood Johnson Foundation (RWJF) that will support a significant expansion of HCCI’s commercial claims data. With new data sources, and enabled by this grant, HCCI’s commercial claims data will represent one third of people with employer-sponsored health insurance in the U.S.

“We are grateful for the Robert Wood Johnson Foundation’s recognition of HCCI’s impact and importance to the national debate on health care spending,” said Niall Brennan, President and CEO of HCCI. “Their generous support helps maintain HCCI’s role as a critical national resource for researchers, policymakers, employers, journalists and the general public.”

“The Robert Wood Johnson Foundation has been a long-time champion of greater insights into health care spending,” said Kathy Hempstead, Program Officer at RWJF. “With this support, HCCI will be able to continue their critical role in informing the policy discussion around health care spending growth, through their own analyses and enabling researcher access to their data.”

HCCI is a trusted source of information on health care spending for executive and legislative branch policymakers, journalists and other stakeholders. Since 2011, HCCI has maintained an accessible and robust multi-payer claims database that has been licensed by more than 130 external researchers, resulting in peer-reviewed papers and presentations. The HCCI data is used for self-directed research and is licensed by researchers at leading universities and other blue-ribbon health care analytic organizations, including CBO and MedPAC.

About the Health Care Cost Institute
The Health Care Cost Institute’s mission is to get to the heart of the key issues impacting the U.S. health care system — by using the best data to get the best answers. HCCI stands for truth and consensus around the most important trends in health care, particularly those economic issues that are critical to a sustainable, high-performing health system. Launched in 2011, HCCI currently holds one of the largest databases for the commercially insured population, and in 2014 became the first national Qualified Entity (QE) entitled to hold Medicare data.
