HCCI Staff
July 1, 2022

HCCI’s data users and staff use our multi-payer, longitudinal commercial claims dataset to study some of the most pressing issues in the U.S. health care system. Here we highlight some recent research using HCCI data:

Where to start? A two stage residual inclusion approach to estimating influence of the initial provider on health care utilization and costs for low back pain in the US | BMC Health Services Research

Diagnostic testing and treatment recommendations can vary when medical care is sought by individuals for low back pain (LBP), leading to variation in quality and costs of care. Using HCCI data, researchers examined how the first provider seen by an individual at initial diagnosis of LBP influences downstream utilization and costs.

Effects of COVID-19 on Health Care Spending Were Concentrated in April-May 2020 | HCCI

In this post, we use HCCI’s unique commercial claims data to go beyond an annual assessment of health care spending by examining monthly changes in spending and use during 2020 and compared to 2019. We find that the decline in spending in 2020 was concentrated in April and May of that year, with an initial reduction in March.
